Call me clueless, but I had no idea Gram Parsons hasn’t yet been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. I mean...doesn’t he just seem like an obvious choice? Well, apparently the Co. Mu. folks don’t think so. Fortunately, some locals had the presence of mind to start a petition a few months back in order to have the Flying Burrito Brother inducted. They recently surpassed their goal of 2,000 signatures, but hell...the more the merrier. Go here to sign.

They’re sending the petition over on Sept. 19—the 35th anniversary of Parsons’ death—and there will be a party/show that night at Nashville Palace featuring covers from Walter Egan and more.

And I'm asking this in all seriousness, why is it that he belongs in the Country Music Hall of Fame? Why is he an "obvious choice"? I'd really like to know, because he's just a dead dude with below average songs and a below average voice. If he gets inducted, it will be with Glenn Frey and Don Felder.

Well, by your statement I ask this question: Have you actually listened to him?? I'm not asking in an ass way, I am asking because you say he has below average songs. His first two records under his solo name contain some of the best songs around, and I highly doubt(IMHO) that anyone who digs country or folk could deny them. The voice thing I understand, but I just see it as part of his character.
Gram Parsons deserves to be in the Country Music Hall of Fame for his contributions to the fusing of country and rock. He was a great songwriter, great guitar player, solid keys player, got the Stones to get into the twang(Some say he wrote "Honky TOnk Woman"), and was a fucking rock star. Ask any musician who is into country, country rock, alt-country, Americana, etc. a majority would cite him as an influence.

We are celebrating Gram Parsons, who died 35 years ago next Friday. But most importantly, I have assembled some of the best COUNTRY artists and bands from around the nation, no wristband required, we are not affiliated in any way with the AMA (although they happened to schedule their national convention at the same time).
It is TOTALLY FREE.
The artists are:
Glenna Bell (who has received a special citation from the Texas House of Representatives)
David Selby, a very tradition country (Bakersfield sound) from LA
The Youngers from Pennsylvania
Burrito Deluxe, featuring Walter Egan of Nashville
Jennifer Brantley and Band from Nashville
Cosmic American Derelicts from South Carolina
James Scott Bullard and Regina Lanier from New Jersey (great real country)
Brian Molnar and Band from New Jersey (great country)
BJ O'Malley of Nashville, in my opinion one of the strongest voices in country today with a great future.
Nashville Palace
2611 McGavock Pike
Nashville, across from Opryland Hotel

Yes, Emily there is a Santa Claus and that is a Nudie suit; Gram was very good friends with Mr. Nudie.
IMHO, Gram was a great, nuanced country singer. Ah, has anyone listened to some the the country artists today try to sing?
It's David Serby, Selby. Typing too fast.
And the petition, which will be delivered to the CMA as a one pager addressing their criteria with an attached List of Signers (2,200 signers and comments from around the world) will get to them by the event. If you'd like to sign it, http://www.gramparsonspetition.com. Thanks.

there is no offense intended here at all, and I love GP, but i wonder if he would even want to be in the CMHOF. he loved the music, but he always kind of gave the finger to the country music establishment (probably because of the finger they gave him first). i'd love to hear that acceptance speech, though. gram and the country music hall of fame belong together, i just don't know if they would want each other.
