In March 2006, the Scene ran a cover story on Nashville Star's inability to create, well, stars. Our cover subject was finalist Kristen McNamara. Today I got this email:

Former Nashville Star contestant Kristen McNamara was featured on your cover March 16, 2006. She has switched from country music to pop music and will be performing a showcase at 12th and Porter on June 23rd @8;30pm. 3 other acts will follow her including Atlantic Records, Muzik Mafia member, Shanna Crooks, also, Beth Cayhall and Anagen.

Putting the grammar aside, it seems the young blonde lass didn't manage to make it big in country music, going from national TV to 12th & Porter. The whole thing is particularly interesting considering Nashville Star's much balleyhooed switch to network television (NBC) this year. Will the larger audience—not to mention the addition of the suddenly ubiquitous Billy Ray Cyrus—mean that one or more of this year's young hopefuls can actually hope to crack the charts? Time will tell.

(Yes, the excellent Miranda Lambert was on the first season of Nashville Star; she finished third.)

(On a side note, if there is a Nashville-filmed reality show curse—see FOX's Hills-inspired Nashville, the aforementioned NS—then HGTV's Design Star better watch their back. The currently airing third season was set in Music City.)
