It was the summer of 2007—mistakenly dubbed the "Summer of Dreamz." Dance parties were in a lull, Local Honey reigned as king (or queens, rather) of outdoor evening festivities, and a scrappy little surfy dance rock band called The Turf was all anyone seemed to talk about for a hot minute. The Turf had generated a good chunk of buzz in a very short amount of time, made the rounds around town, put in an appearance at the Exit/In and then *poof*... they vanished just as quickly as they appeared.
So what the hell ever happened to those guys? It's the exact same question your curious correspondent was contemplating just days ago when I sent a friendly MySpace message to the band in hopes of deducing an answer for anyone else who'd wondered the same. This is what I found out...
Being young as they were, higher education was on the horizon and their departure to bigger and better things was inevitable. Guitarist/keyboardist Slade Otis Utely spent a semester in France before attending USC in Los Angeles. Bassist Nigel Hood shipped off to Boston University, drummer Nick Carter to Brown, and Singer/guitarist Brendan Mayer is taking a year off, still here in Nashville. As for a formal explanation for dropping off the face of the Earth, the boys had this to say:
"We didn't feel ready to write the album we knew we could. We believed so much in each other and in our music that we knew a year wouldn't break us up. We might have been too young, who knows? Time apart allowed us (and is allowing us) to grow individually and truly evaluate our long term lives and and if we wanted The Turf to be a major part of them. Fuck it, we're confused teenagers dealing with the identity crises that everyone goes through... and after weeks of contemplation, we decided the only way we feel right in expressing ourselves is through music."
All dramatics aside, Nick and Brandon assured me they're still just "goofy-ass Nashville boys who just want to have some fun, make some edgy dance music, and get people excited again." As for the future of the band, the wonders of the Interweb have made it possible for them to continue writing and recording together. They even have a new track on their MySpace page called "Man Gone Loose". They'll be doing a short tour this spring, releasing an EP shortly after and will be returning to Music City this summer to write some songs, record a full length, and play some more shows.
