No, it’s not the latest diet fad. When the Scene spoke with Jon Fishman about his upcoming appearance at the Del McCoury Band New Year’s Eve show at the Ryman, the Phish drummer shared this particularly poignant memory from his early days in a frat-house band. It's a story you won't want to miss, though you'll never look at an olive the same way again.

Rebounding in record time from their double slam on both Pitchfork and Cream last week, the electro wizards from Jensen Sportag present the second event in their Club Sportag series tonight. It's a sacrilicious holiday-themed dance party titled Holy Night. Joining them are Justin Kase, Oliver Dodd, the Club Sportag DJ's, the Nashville Craft Apocalypse, and enough lights, visuals, and volume to rival even that crazy Pink Floyd Laser Light Show.

On Dec. 28, The Family Wash is hosting iPod Night. Bring in a playlist of 12 songs or fewer, and they'll play it, all night from 6 p.m. to close.
A friend of mine used to play the Smashing Pumpkins song "Drown" every time we went to a certain bar in our college town. He did this because 1.) the three minutes of guitar feedback really irritated people (this is back when most people who even knew who the Pumpkins were thought they were from Seattle), and B.) he felt like he was getting better value for his dollar, since it was one of the longest songs on the jukebox.
First up on my work version of iTunes: "Her Lips Were Wet With Venom," the Sunn O)))/Boris/Earth collaboration (which makes the Pumpkins' tune seem like DK's "I Like Short Songs" in comparison)—clocking in at a cool 28:14. What's your longest?

2007 is wrapping up ya'll, so in this issue we asked our critics to list the year's top records (or in the case of bluegrass, events) in their respective beats. Feel free to weigh in with your own top fives or tens from this past year, and of course point out glaring omissions. Next week, look for our second annual rock poll, where we ask local musicians and promoters to wax candid about local music, as well as whose ass they'd like to kick most.

National Skyline Cortney Tidwell's Pitchfork Shout-Out: Pretty Cool

Cortney Tidwell comes in at No. 31 on Pitchfork's Top 100 Tracks of 2007. Here's what they had to say:
31: Cortney Tidwell — "Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up (Ewan's Objects in Space Remix)" [Ever]The Ewan in question is British (though currently based in Berlin) producer/DJ Ewan Pearson, whose work for Goldfrapp, the Rapture, and Franz Ferdinand (among many others) have made him one of the most in-demand remixers going. And for good reason: As "Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up" demonstrates, Pearson has a gift for extracting the most important elements in his source tracks, and orchestrating dense rivers of lush disco-house around them. Nashville indie-folk singer Tidwell's modest, pretty vocal is kept intact, but instead of her original plaintive guitar accompaniment, we get a crisp house kick and layers of fuzzy, mildly spaced-out Debussy chords with electro-glitter for flavor. In the hands of a lesser producer, this could have turned into formless mush. On the contrary, this is beautiful. —Dominique Leone
