Last night I checked out The Foundry Field Recordings at The Basement, a show I had been looking forward to, and one that did not disappoint. And FFR had so many '90s indie tropes going it was crazy:
- Sincerity!
- Female bass player. Using a Gallien-Kruger amp. And an e-bow!
- Another e-bow!
- Synchronized pedal-stomping!
- Counterintuitive drumming!
- Majestic build-ups!
- Steve Madden shoes!
- Boss Digital Delay!
- Backs turned to the audience!
You might be put off by my over-exclaiming, but it was a great show. The band is out on the road for a few weeks, then will head back to Missouri to work day jobs for a bit, finish school in one case, and eventually get cracking on a new record. If you're into that kind of thing, the first Foundry Field Recordings EP is downloadable at
battlebrigades.com. More songs streamable, listenable and enjoyable at the
FFR MySpace.

I will say this about Astronautilus: the guy can freestyle. (Yes, there was a hip-hop act on the same bill as a shoegazery indie pop band.) He took topics from the audience (duct tape, the theory that aliens built the pyramids, Michael Vick, garbagemen, Richard Gere and one more I can't remember) and wove a tale both absurd and entertaining over laptop beats. His other stuff didn't really grab me and his comedy routine wasn't really my thing, but I have to hand it to the guy for bringing it in front of 15 people on a Monday night. I didn't see much of openers Natives of the New Dawn, but they were funky.

It's hard to see in these photos, but drummer Benjamin Hook looks a bit like Joel J. Dahl. And during one song he pulled out an acoustic guitar that looked like it had a shattered mirror glued to it.
