Troy Gentry and the Bear

Posted by Edd Hurt on Wed, Nov 29, 2006 at 11:26 AM

Troy Gentry, the non-hat-wearing half of country music's Montgomery Gentry, pleaded Nov. 27 to a charge of improperly tagging a bear he killed in 2004. Depending on what the U.S. District Court in Duluth, Minn. decides, he could face a $15,000 fine and forfeiture of his weapon. And of the bear, who now reportedly graces Gentry's Tennessee house. The press statement released by the duo's label, Sony/BMG, quotes Gentry: "I did participate in improperly tagging the animal I shot, without realizing the seriousness of what I was doing. For that, I am truly sorry. I relied on the experts around me for guidance, and I regret that today. Not so much because I was fined and punished, but because it appears that I don't have respect for the law."

Montgomery Gentry's new record is Some People Change. Reports that they plan to do a hell-raisin' cover of The Big Bopper's old rock and roll novelty number "Running Bear" (the Texas-born Bopper wrote it, Johnny Preston sang it), which was memorably revived by The Guess Who, are apparently just hot air. Yeah, I know "Running Bear" is about a Native American, not a bear, but we all have our troubles, even Troy Gentry and Burton Cummings.

Since Michael Richards met with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton to apologize, maybe Troy can set up some sort of meeting with Jack Hanna and Joan Embry.
