Cumberland Gallery starts 2010 on a novel note, replacing their recent show of established gallery artists with Young Turks, a new exhibit by talented, local up-and-comers. Dane Carders best-known painted panels are rendered from Civil War tintypes, but his stylized, abstract work borrows from more contemporary photographic sources, and their amorphous forms pack even more punch than his realistic offerings. Max Shuster photographs constructed surreal scenes, and his conceptual intentions are buoyed by his works careful, considered composition. Jeff Greens mixed-media abstracts are more sculptural than painterly, and the artists give-and-take dialog with his layered surfaces results in lovely statements of texture and color.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Jan. 9. Continues through Jan. 30, 2010
