Young Frankenstein at The Belcourt's Second Saturday Summer Drive-In

What Knockers!

With Abbott & Costello Meet the Wolf Man on one side and Scary Movie on the other, it’s safe to call Mel Brooks’ affectionate 1974 burlesque the peak of the horror-spoof genre—but that’s still a little like calling Jaws the best fish movie ever made. It seems less dated after nearly 35 years than Scary Movie 4 did after 35 minutes, thanks to a tip-top cast—Gene Wilder with light-socket hair and timing to match, Marty Feldman’s bug-eyed Igor, Peter Boyle as a monster with an expressively arched eyebrow, two hilarious bookended sexpots in Madeline Kahn and Teri Garr, and a Very Big Star playing a blind hermit in one of the greatest cameos ever—and to Brooks’ loving recreation of black-and-white Universal horror, down to the backlot Transylvania and torch-bearing villagers. The movie closes The Belcourt’s summer series of free outdoor screenings in its side parking lot; bring chairs or watch from your car. Concessions will be available.
