Wye Oak w/Braids

When: Tue., May 20, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $15-$17
Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner is a restless songwriter: After her band’s excellent 2011 full-length Civilian, she took some side roads — first plumbing the echoic shoegaze depths with her solo project Flock of Dimes, then exploring beat-driven rhythmic backdrops with producer John Ehrens as Dungeonesse. So it makes a certain kind of sense that Wasner, one of the more expressive guitarists in latter-day indie rock, would eschew the six-string altogether for Shriek, Wye Oak’s brilliantly tumultuous new album. Turning instead to bass — sometimes recalling the wistful funkiness of Young Marble Giants — and backed by a variety of textures variously struck and triggered by drummer-keyboardist Andy Stack, Wasner has managed to bend another set of textures to her will. And as ever, her rich, expressive voice makes the center hold. Similarly, it’s Raphaelle Standell-Preston’s keen, searching vocals that tie Braids’ tilt-a-whirling soundscapes together — and both bands are much more forceful live than the more contemplative corners of their recorded material might suggest.
