WRVU Benefit

Radio Silence

Radio Silence
The timing of Vanderbilt’s latest 91.1-WRVU benefit falls amidst a din of controversy. Not two weeks ago, administrators overseeing the radio station announced that they’d be paring down the number of “non-affiliate DJs” (non-student/non-alumnus/non-staff) from roughly 50 to just 25. The announcement brought an enormous influx of outraged community members to the Scene’s music blog, Nashville Cream, where many claimed that this was the latest in a series of moves to significantly impede the local music community’s influence on and contributions to the station. Many suggested, in fact, that boycotting this very show might send a message to WRVU administrators. While righteous indignation over station heads’ seemingly callous dismissal of longtime contributors appears warranted, supporters of local music must ask ourselves one question: Would boycotting this show send a message to Vanderbilt’s Student Communications Board, who are seldom directly involved or interested in such events? Or would a boycott more likely only affect the participating bands and venue? How community members respond to this—and larger questions raised by the WRVU fiasco—remains to be seen. Whimsical genre-benders Cheer Up Charlie Daniels and key-heavy circus-rock experimentalists Vermicious K’nids perform.
