Take a browse through Murat Kaboulov’s website and you may find yourself struggling to resist the urge to call him and say, “For God's sake, get some sleep!” Exceptionally prolific, the Russian-born and -educated Brentwood resident manages to cover a variety of different painting styles—abstract, figurative, portraiture, cityscape, still life—in addition to drawing and sculpture. What’s more, he manages to pull it off without looking like a dabbler. In his pieces exploring the human figure, he marries Impressionism’s bold colors and romance with a certain modern abandon, often allowing paint to drip down the canvas at gravity’s behest, while his cityscapes (many depicting his Russian homeland) reflect a stylistic breadth not typically seen from a single artist. Kaboulov is currently the featured artist at The Gallery at Covenant Design, a relatively new art space in Brentwood. Housed in the former conference room and reception area of Covenant Design Group, the gallery is a natural fit for the architecture/engineering firm, according to partner Len Blackwell. “Art and architecture lend themselves to each other, and it exposes us to a crowd with whom we might not otherwise interact,” he says. “When we design homes for people, they think nothing of spending $7,000 on a granite countertop, but they don’t typically consider buying a piece of fine art that they’ll have forever and probably pass down to their children.” Point well taken.
