Since we last mentioned Hunt Adams' paintings, he's been keeping busy playing guitar with the local pop/rock outfit the Millionaire Magicians. The Magicians have gotten a few shout-outs from us for the sly wisdom on display in songs like “Sneaky Demon,” and Adams’ latest canvases are evoking a bit of dark magic as well: Francis Bacon takes a Rorschach Test in 1969. Many of Adams' renderings seem to owe their symmetry to front-end digital manipulation. The result makes one nostalgic for the naive bifurcations we all played at when Photoshop first came out. Adams' abstracted figures are often transformed into mandala-like swirls of energy and fun-house-mirror distortions that suggest his subjects have slipped between the worlds, lured in by the gleaming of that old alchemical gold, no doubt.
