Did you ever melt your Crayolas as a kid? Or have you noticed that plastic, luminescent quality of melted candle wax? The technique of encaustic painting cashes in on the beauty and opacity of wax-based pigments. Mary Long Postal’s current show at Tinney Contemporary offers the rare chance to see an entire gallery exhibition devoted to this medium. If you have not dipped into Tinney this month, stop in today. Photographs do not do Postal’s work justice: Because of the nature of encaustic, you have to view these in person to see the myriad layers and sculptural quality of her large-scale canvasses. Stand beside the paintings in profile to get a sense of the thick application of wax and resin on their slightly transparent surfaces.
