Winds of Plague at the Muse

Sticks and Stones

Sticks and Stones
Last year's The Great Stone War by Winds of Plague sports one of metal's great cheesy album covers — the kind that makes you doubt or fear the band's sincerity. Depicting a knight and demon facing off with gleaming swords in cartoonish Lord of the Rings flair, the album pretty much sounds exactly what it looks like. The subject matter is easy enough to guess: a concept album about one final apocalyptic battle the epicness of which is too great to be fought with anything other than stones. The power-metal keyboards that sit on top of the mix are a given, but the deeply guttural death metal underneath is a less obvious counterpart. The result would be the equivalent to Metalocalypse's Dethklok soundtracking a Final Fantasy video game, which is amusing even if not particularly good.
