Remember the good ol’ days of barbecue, banjos and beverages on the town square, with the fiery oration of back-slapping pols as the day’s entertainment? Nah, us either. But we’re willing to give it a shot as the Loveless hosts a July 4 picnic with the Tennessee Democrat All-Stars as guests of honor: U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, gubernatorial candidate Mike McWherter, congressional contenders Greg Rabidoux and Ben Lemming, and District 13 state senate candidate Debbie Matthews. It’ll be like the rallies in O Brother, Where Art Thou?, just with skinnier Pappy McDaniels (and fewer midgets). Along with food, games, a silent auction and a tribute to America’s soldiers, there’ll be music by the Bloggrass Boys, progressive political humorists who suggest what might’ve happened if the Father of Bluegrass had been Mark Russell. Tickets are $25, half-price for those under 18.
