William Fitzsimmons at Mercy Lounge

Iron & Who?

Iron & Who?
Forever fixed in the shadow of Sam Beam—not only for his lightly rusted acoustic folk, homespun Southern anthems and gently hushed lyrics, but also the gargantuan bee's-nest neck curtain he sports—William Fitzsimmons has been unfairly tagged over the years as a second-rate Iron & Wine. While the similarities are undeniable, they’re also superficial: this Pittsburgh, Pa., bedroom artist spoons out humble coffeehouse ballads and stoic yet poignant confessionals in equal doses. Still out behind his third full-length, last year's The Sparrow and the Crow, and a live EP to support a slight push for exposure, Fitzsimmons may only get the table scraps of his betters—but this is one artist noteworthy in his own right.
