WFSK-FM 88.1 has occupied a unique place in the Nashville radiosphere since 1973. Its the only spot on the dial (and one of the few in the entire region) where listeners can hear smooth jazz programming, a fusion of instrumentals, vocals and band numbers that range from delicate ballads to fierce grooves and beats. Yet the station is also host to more than 20 weekly specialty programs that range from political and cultural talkfests to highly praised national shows hosted by Tavis Smiley and Wynton Marsalis. But most importantly, WFSK is a listener-supported station that depends heavily on its audience for fiscal aid. The stations fourth annual 48-hour Radiothon gets underway Friday at 9 a.m. and continues through Sunday at 9 a.m. Listeners can call in pledges at 329-8810. This years goal is $88,100.
