Nashville theater keeps getting its share of local premieres thanks to folks like Tennessee Women's Theater Project. Their latest is this 2004 Lisa Kron piece, essentially a monologue by a woman who draws upon her life experience to discuss serious issues like race and health, only to endure peanut-gallery sidebars from her mother, who exasperatingly remembers the relevant events a lot differently. If Well sounds painfully funny--as mothers often are--well, that's what it's supposed to be. Charged with carrying the play's heaviest burden as narrator and daughter is Lisa Dunaway, who, when she deigns to take to the stage, is a smart and ingratiating presence. Veteran character actress Carole Shaw plays mom and has to settle for hurling the brickbats and getting the big laughs. The cast also includes Shane Bridges, Shonka Dukure, Bakari King and Stacia McKee in a series of supporting roles. Maryanna Clarke directs.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Feb. 20. Continues through March 8, 2009
