We Hear...

The Vanderbilt student stereotype goes as follows: rich, WASPish, conservative, belongs to a fraternity or sorority. The New York Times certainly went for that Sunday. It was all part of a fashion spread, featuring college students and what they wear. There were photographs from U.C. Santa Barbara (vintage stuff), University of Michigan (Ugg boots), Goucher College (pajama bottoms to class) and NYU (doing the "newsboy" look). Meanwhile, from Vanderbilt: "Country-club-ready closets include skirts, spiky heels and monograms.... To look like a fraternity brother, pop the collar on your Polo shirt and "frat tuck" it in—that is, front only." Then the Times quoted Kristin Smith, a junior: "There's an attitude here of, 'We're young, we're fabulous and we've got money in our pockets....' "

♦ Nashvillian Prentice Nelson, who recently graduated from Annapolis, is in, of all places, Fallujah. We wish him—and his lovely mother, Sandy, and wonderful sister Carrington—the best. Come home soon.

♦ If anyone hears an intriguing little story about a prominent local health care company executive dinging the Mercedes next to him with his car door, please call Matt Pulle at 244-7989, ext. 445.

♦ Meanwhile, did anyone notice that, now that Sheryl Crow has bought property somewhere in Middle Tennessee, her alleged love interest, Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong, was riding in a road race in nearby Georgia last week? As we said before, it's only a matter of time before he's flying around the 11.2-mile Percy Warner loop.
