We Hear...

Former UT pigskin icon and Colts QB Peyton Manning was in town Friday, hanging with retired Titan Frank Wycheck at Bar Twenty3. For some reason, Manning was also checking IDs at the door. Celebrity bouncer...? ♦ Seen in town recently: Joel Kaplan, former extreme bad-ass investigative reporter for The Tennessean who was flown in to lecture at Vanderbilt University. Kaplan, who runs the journalism department at Syracuse University, used to walk in government officials’ offices for the fun of it, ask them to move over, and then rummage through their files, which state law allows a reporter to do. Not that it makes many friends. ♦ This is one deal that didn’t go down at The Palm: Apparently, Ned McWherter’s endorsement of John Kerry was decided at Sperry’s Restaurant on Harding at a dinner that included former U.S. Sen. Harlan Mathews. McWherter’s endorsement had been in doubt, but when he agreed to endorse Kerry at the time everyone wanted, the entire assemblage rose, proceeded to the salad bar and celebrated. ♦ Thanks for all the calls about Happy Walking Man. Apparently he’s still happy. ♦ This bumper sticker seen on a van in Hillsboro Village: “Somewhere in Texas a village has lost its idiot.”
