From the boardroom to the classroom, the word "diversity" gets kicked around a lot these days. It turns out that such abstract discussions only get you so far. In his new book, New York Times reporter and Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer author Warren St. John shows where the diversity rubber hits the small-town road. Titled Outcasts United, the book chronicles the true struggles of a soccer team comprised of refugee kids from all over the world and the Jordanian coach who inspires them. Set in tiny Clarkston, Ga., Outcasts United weaves the children's tales of loss, persecution and horror with the story of Clarkston, a declining town that, in spite of itself, has become a first stop for families fleeing the world's war zones. Warren St. John will speak about Outcasts United.
