Wale at Phatkaps

Noted sneaker freak and (fingers crossed) rap’s next big thing, D.C. rapper Wale is making a special in-store appearance at PhatKaps before ripping the roof off Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gym. Wale’s been here twice before in the wake of his instant-classic Seinfeld-inspired The Mixtape About Nothing, but this time he’s got a brand-spanking-new major-label debut, Attention: Deficit. The new album lands firmly between classicism and futurism, with contemporary synth sounds cozying up to the indigenous go-go sounds of his native D.C. and a fistful of guest spots that seem less like typical major-label machinations to break a new artist and more like a bunch of musicians maneuvering to make it on the most exciting album in recent memory. If you haven’t made the trek out to Antioch to peep PhatKaps yet, quit sleepin’. This is gonna be the jam.
