Nashville might seem like an unlikely venue for one of two star-studded affairs (the other’s in L.A.) that put a closing exclamation mark on Voices United, a 50-state concert campaign organized by Americans United for Separation of Church and State. But this is where a prominent religious publishing house just recently pulled the plug on its own edition of a meretricious portrayal of Thomas Jefferson as a prayer-in-public-schools type, so maybe it shouldn’t. In any event, Music City’s representing quite nicely, with a selection of performers that shows unmistakably how, as they always have, country and folk artists have more than one understanding of what patriotism and the legacy of guys like Jefferson mean. It’s a concert, so don’t expect an evening full of lectures, but don’t expect the First Amendment — and the issues that it still addresses today — to go unmentioned from the stage, either.
