Their tactful rock ’n’ roll keeps the turmoil in the background, where it probably belongs, but Sarah Lee Guthrie and Jeremy Irion don’t neglect the tough stuff throughout their new full-length release Bright Examples. A married couple whose affinities are with both country-rock and folk, Guthrie and Irion have come up with a sure-footed take on progressive folk, complete with jangling guitars, ghostly background vocals and lyrics that address poverty and other uncomfortable subjects. The youngest daughter of famed folkie Arlo Guthrie, Sarah Lee sings in an early-morning voice that wavers but never cracks, while Irion sounds somewhat more pop-friendly. Andy Cabic and Thom Monahan’s production adds piano and steel guitar to a set of terrific songs — this is baroque folk with a quietist edge. Bright Examples makes its mild-mannered case for utopia, and that’s the kind of idealism we can all believe in.
