Valentine's Show feat. Gladys Knight and the Nashville Symphony

When: Fri., Feb. 11, 8 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 12, 8 p.m. 2011
Watch a recent video of Gladys Knight performing her 1973 chart-topping “Midnight Train to Georgia” and you’ll find that, in the words of the late, great Aaliyah, “age ain’t nothing but a number” for The Empress of Soul. Courtesy of the Schermerhorn’s website, the clip depicts a legend who believes without a doubt that she’s as capable as she was in her prime. You’ll believe it too: Singing with an exalted, no-frills swagger, Knight bounds across an enormous stage, reminding the ebullient crowd as the song concludes that “We gotta ride that train. Yes we do.” The image is refreshing. Instead of opportunistically going through the motions, Knight appears to still find genuine strength in the soul sound that made her a star. Indeed, expect The Empress to hold court when she performs with the Nashville Symphony over two nights leading up to Valentine’s.
