If you’re an East Sider, you’ve likely come to know Mad Donna’s as a primo neighborhood spot for hangover-curing brunches and decent karaoke. But from time to time up in Donna’s Music Loft, booze-fueled aspiring karaoke superstars are replaced by local rock, pop and Americana outfits — booze-fueled though they may or may not be. This weekend, Mad Donna’s hosts an enormous assortment of local talent with their Unlucky Fest, taking place upstairs on Friday and Saturday nights. Roughly two dozen artists are slated to play, among them roots- and trad-country-peddling singer and frequent 5 Spot host Derek Hoke — along with his chops-heavy sometime backing band The Clones, also playing a set of their own — bluesy swamp-rocking outfit Denney and the Jets, sometimes heart-on-sleeve, sometimes tongue-in-cheek roots and Americana troubadours Little Bandit, rockabilly Cash-ophile Phil Hummer and his White Falcons and loads more. Hop on Facebook (ever heard of it?) and search “Unlucky Fest at Mad Donna’s Music Loft” for the full list of artists. Oh, I forgot to tell you guys the best part: The whole thing is free.
