Unexpect & more at The Muse

A sci-fi geek's wet dream, Montreal's Unexpect weave tales of mythological creatures, faraway lands and the supernatural and pair them with ridiculously over-the-top theatrics. Borrowing from just about every metal off-shoot possible and indulging a flair for the operatic and all things medieval, the septet originally gained international notoriety with their self-released and self-distributed debut Utopia. Two albums later, Unexpect's propensity toward every imaginable aural excess leads to the band's most recognizable distinctions but also gets the best of them, occasionally sounding a bit silly for their hyper-seriousness.
