This exhibit of narrative work tells the tale of two painters. The real story behind Mr. Hooper's paintings for the show is that it includes some of the best work we've seen from the local fav. By populating his pieces almost exclusively with cartoon and toy characters--relieved from their pop-inspired human counterparts--Hooper's work in this show carries the kind of somber poignancy that only a homeless robot or a lost leprechaun can summon. Samuel Dunson Jr. is recognized as one of the city's best painters and his contributions here find him reaching beyond hip-hop preoccupations into straight-up quotes from the likes of Pablo Picasso and Francisco de Goya.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: April 29. Continues through May 30, 2009
