Tracy Barrett Signing and Discussion

When: Mon., Oct. 4, 4 p.m. 2010
Young-adult novel King of Ithaka has a cover slogan that reads like a movie tagline: “How far would you go to find the father you’ve never known?” As readers of Homer’s enduring action-comedy know, ancient Greeks always go to extremes. Local author Tracy Barrett teaches at Vanderbilt and has written such critically acclaimed books as the Sherlock Files series. She now turns her attention to Telemachos’ search for his father, who (as the story begins) has been gone for 16 years total, having failed to return from the decade-long Trojan War. An oracle tells the teen that Ithaka will lack a king until he goes in quest of Odysseus. What follows is a seagoing road trip rife with adventure, as Telemachos journeys to Pylos and Sparta with his centaur friend Brax and love interest Polydora. Telemachos tells his story in graceful, weighty prose that captures its vividness and epic grandeur.
