Tim O'Brien at Station Inn

Deep Roots

Deep Roots
Though he’s yet to win an Americana Music Association award—IBMA honors and Grammys will just have to do for now—Tim O’Brien is arguably the consummate Americana artist. His sensibilities—and the music they shape—cover a ridiculously large swath of roots-music territory, but O’Brien’s no tourist. Wherever he stops, he’s got, well, roots. Plenty of them are in bluegrass soil, and so tonight’s change of pace from the solo shows behind last year’s Chameleon project is a welcome one, especially with the band he’s assembled for the occasion. “All-star” is a manifestly inadequate term here, not least because it sounds too serious; musically and otherwise, these are cats whose wits match O’Brien’s: sly, deft and easygoing. And with a deep, deep catalog of songs—O’Brien’s own and others’, bluegrass, country, folk and more—it’s bound to be a musical tour worth taking.
