The World Famous Headliners feat. Al Anderson, Pat McLaughlin, Shawn Camp, Michael Rhodes, Greg Morrow & Tristan Prettyman

When: Sun., Aug. 19, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5
The reason to get excited about the World Famous Headliners’ self-titled debut album isn’t that they’re a hungry young band stirring up next-big-thing-type buzz; they’re definitely — even defiantly — not that. These five guys have already broken into the business and experienced various kinds of success for decades. They could easily be in cruise-control mode. Instead, they’ve gotten seriously playful with their well-honed chops — and not the least bit showy — making it damn hard not to enjoy their wired and wiry Southern groove-pop right along with them. Fronting this band are three singing lead guitarists with loads of songwriting cuts: Big Al Anderson, Shawn Camp and Pat McLaughlin. They know what makes a song work, and the baker’s dozen they’ve co-written here hit the sweet spot between rock ’n’ roll classicism and clever tweaking. But this isn’t just a songwriting showcase. These guys — along with bassist Michael Rhodes and drummer Greg Morrow — really get down and keep it loose, exchanging biting, funky solos and drifting between unison singing and scruffy harmonies. Hell, Anderson probably hasn’t had this much fun since NRBQ.
