The White Animals w/Los Delgados

When: Sat., Sept. 22, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $15-$20
In the White Animals’ 1980s heyday, there were likely college kids who saw the band more often than they saw their professors. Kings of the Southeast frat-party circuit, frontman Kevin Gray, guitarist Rich Parks, bassist Steve Boyd, drummer Ray Crabtree and secret-weapon “dubmaster” Tim Coats mixed dub, reggae and post-punk pop into a skank-friendly brew that wowed college radio listeners and beer-hoisting undergrads in the heady early days of the MTV era. (We saw them at Vanderbilt’s Underwood Auditorium in 1983; their opening act was some bunch of also-rans called Los Lobos.) Not only were they among the first Music City bands to land a video on then-new Music Television, their seminal indie label DreadBeat provided a template other bands would follow for years, with the 1981 Nashville Babylon EP an essential artifact of Nashville New Wave. If you remember those epic 25-minute versions of “Gloria” better than you do your graduation ceremony, relive those days tonight with the Animals’ first public performance in three years. Opening act Los Delgados perform songs influenced by traditional Mexican music in advance of their upcoming Los Delgados de Nashville EP.
