Tennessee U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson was dispatched during the last several days to join the George W. Bush ranks and criticize manual recounts in Florida. Thompson toed the GOP line on the news shows that they are subject to human errors and arbitrary judgments. “There seems to be an impression that the more you handle these ballots, the longer you take, and the more recounts you have, the more accurate results you’re going to get,” Thompson said. “Quite the contrary.”

Uncommon honors

Common Cause of Tennessee last week honored Tennessee GOP Gov. Don Sundquist and Democratic state Sen. Bob Rochelle for their efforts to overhaul the state’s troubled tax structure. Members of Sundquist’s own political party have even withheld event invitations and gone so far as to boo him at public appearances. Common Cause, meanwhile, has recognized the two men for their honest efforts at tax reform.
