Chris Stapleton’s gut-wrenching vocals were so big a part of SteelDrivers’ sound that a lot of folks figured the quintet would hang it up when he departed, shortly after the completion of their second studio album. But the remaining members have personal and professional connections that go back a long, long time, and in the end, they opted for recruiting a new guy and pressing onward. Early reports (and YouTube clips) are promising, for Gary Nichols has some serious vocal muscle to go with his Muscle Shoals pedigree. Plus he’s already mastered the songs from
Reckless, the album due out later this summer. So yes, Stapleton’s going to be missed — but smart money remembers that there are plenty of acts that have undergone changes in lead singers to not only survive, but prosper. And if anyone can do it, these guys (and gal) can.
