It’s easy to poke fun at The Protomen — they are, after all, a band that has recorded two acts of a rock opera about a video game prominently featuring somebody named “Guts Man.” But, even if you’re not down with nerd stuff, you really have to hand it to them for accomplishing big things. In their relatively short lifespan they’ve played festivals like Bonnaroo and Bamboozle, survived opening for Tenacious D, and bred a dedicated fanbase so loyal that it’s actually a little terrifying. For their latest trick, The Protomen have released A Night of Queen, a live recording of last year’s Queen tribute show in which they sounded even Queenier than whatever is passing for Queen these days. To celebrate the album’s release, they’re doing it all over again, touching on every favorite from “Don’t Stop Me Now” to an inspired duet of “Under Pressure.” Along for the ride are the Re-Mones (get it?), and the Non-Commissioned Officers covering Iggy Pop. Now, hand over your lunch money, dorks.
