With record sales universally in the toilet and the radio gods smiling only on artists whose names rhyme with “rustin’ beaver” these days, there’s plenty of reason to reevaluate what makes a band “successful.” But by whatever metric you use, it’s hard to argue against The Protomen. They’ve cultivated a fan base that takes “cultish” to new (and occasionally creepy) levels, their live show puts navel-gazing indie rockers to shame, and in the span of a month they’ll play two major nerdfests, including Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, a convention that drew over 60,000 people last year. Before heading out on the road again, The Protomen will bring the 8-bit arena-rock thunder for a hometown show. Joining them for the gig are Magic Hammer, Eric “RainbowDragonEyes” Brown’s power-metal-by-way-of-
Castlevania project, and perennial opener/one-man electro dance party Make-Up and Vanity Set.
