An intriguing mix of major label refugees and longtime toilers just outside the spotlights, Skyline Motel is so new that they have
no recording, website, manager, bio — not even a Facebook page. Some
of those things, including a record, are
on the way, but in the meantime, they’ve got Sarah Buxton, Ian Fitchuk, Daniel Tashian and Kate York, abetted by guitarist Tom Bukovac and bass man David LaBruyere — and a book of solid songs. A couple of YouTube videos from their first public appearance, all of eight weeks ago, suggests they’re heading for a kind of homemade pop, with plenty of harmonic and lyrical sophistication, and some irresistible hooks mated to lean, rootsy backing — not glossy, overstuffed arrangements. That keeps the attention on the songs and the singers, and for good reason.
