The Monster Squad w/Dr. Gangrene

When: Sat., Oct. 23, 2 p.m. 2010
How’s this for a movie: The Goonies Meet Dracula! That’s the basic idea behind Fred Dekker’s beloved 1987 horror comedy, a fanboy jamboree pitting a group of foul-mouthed adolescent horror geeks against Duncan Regehr’s power-hungry Drac and basically the entire Universal roster of big-screen monsters (the Wolfman, the Creature, the Mummy, etc.). The wiseguy script was co-written by Night of the Creeps director Dekker and his UCLA classmate Shane Black, who became Hollywood’s high-concept king for a decade after his original Lethal Weapon screenplay: It’s the next best thing to curling up with a stack of Famous Monsters back issues and a pack of Pringles — and who else would you want to host this free pre-Halloween screening but everyone’s favorite disorderly gore-derly, local horror host Dr. Gangrene? Projected from DVD.
— Jim Ridley
