Its tempting to look at the Lovell Sistersa young, Georgia-based female acoustic trioand group them with The Dixie Chicks descendents. Tempting, but shortsighted. The Lovellsall between the ages of 18 and 23really arent a country band. Sure, Jessica (fiddle), Megan (dobro) and Rebecca (guitar and mandolin) take an understated country turn from time to time. Take One Moment and Blowin Away on their new album, Time To Grow, are examples. But they seem to be keeping most of their eggs in the bluegrass basketor newgrass, really. They devote a couple of tracks on the album to instrumentals: one an energetic, shape-shifting cover (Itchetucknee Chutney) and the other, The Door In the Wall, moony, lyrical and melodically intricate. Like Natalie Maines, the Lovellswho share lead vocal dutiessing with full-throated force and pop polish. Only with them, theres no hint of twang. Or Toby Keith-bristling politics.
