Madeleine Sackler’s documentary about a lottery at a charter school in Harlem has been alternately lauded as a probing look at the failures of our public education system and panned as a piece of pro-charter school agitprop. (Teachers’ unions acting thuggish and protecting incompetent educators? Why, never!) There’s no denying the filmmaker has a strong point of view, painting Harlem Success Academy’s Eva Moskowitz as something of a savior, but it’s hard to fault Sackler when the school’s students outperform their peers in other Harlem public schools by astronomical margins. The screening is sponsored by Nashville Prep, a proposed charter school that would open in fall 2011. Prospective students, parents, interns, volunteers and supporters are encouraged to attend.
