Here’s a concept: A singer-songwriter who baby-sits on the side puts together a one-off ensemble composed of musicians whose kids she’s looked after while they were on the road. Could be disastrous, for sure, but not when the singer-songwriter is Julie Lee, one of the best — if also one of the more under-appreciated — singers and songwriters in town. And those Baby-Daddies? Start with guitarist Kenny Vaughan of Marty Stuart’s aptly named Fabulous Superlatives and the ever reliable, always busy Mike Bub on bass and go from there, not forgetting local producer Ian Fitchuk on percussion and a delicious assortment of guests (including Jason Goforth on lap steel). As for Ms. Lee, she’s one of those who can drawl out a languid, Southern-flavored slice of Americana, strum an open-back banjo in an old-time style or turn out a haunting Appalachian ballad like “Jacob’s Dream,” famously recorded by Alison Krauss. Good stuff.
