The Holy Mountain

When: Wed., June 11, 7:30 p.m. 2014
First off, kudos to the Belcourt crew for booking what is hands-down one of the greatest summer movie lineups in recorded history. From repertory to first-run, our little arthouse is straight killin’ it this season. And to top it all off, they booked what might be the freakiest film ever to pass through a projector, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s The Holy Mountain. Jodorowsky may have secured a spot in the cult-movie hall of fame with his psychedelic Western El Topo, but The Holy Mountain catapulted him to god-like status among psychonauts and weirdophiles the world over. With visuals that transcend description — Ass-painting! Crucified dogs! Weird guns! — and a story that we’re still trying to parse after countless viewings, The Holy Mountain is the pinnacle of freak culture, and a must-see for adventurous cinephiles. SEAN L. MALONEY
