Revered children's author Lois Lowry may have won a Newbery Medal (her second) for her 1993 fantasy, but some parents considered its bleak premise inappropriate for younger readers. To its credit, Nashville Children's Theatre did not back down from the challenging material. In Lowry's dystopian vision, the notion of family serves only practical societal purposes, and drugs control the impulses for love and sex. When 12-year-old Jonas receives his "life assignment," he faces something he's never encountered before: the truth behind his bland, complacent existence. Scot Copeland's staging stars the excellent Peter Vann, along with worthy supporting players such as Buddy Raper, Evelyn Blythe and Patrick Waller. Ancillary show events include a Feb. 6 dream interpretation workshop conducted by Shoshana Abraham and Feb. 14's "The Giver Rehearsed," a look inside the play's rehearsal process with NCT artistic staff. Recommended for ages 9 & up.
