Re: “Saint Christopher w/Overzealous, Resident Scout & Anchor Thieves

It was such a great show! Resident Scout was so explosive; I kept running their songs in the back of my head even after I got home! The End was such a great place too. It had a quaint, hip, and cozy feel to it.

Re: “The Evolution Control Committee w/stAllio!, Quiet Entertainer, DJ Empirical & Pimpdaddysupreme

The Evolution Control Committee under the leadership of Trademark G. (aka Mark Gunderson) has been challenging copyright laws since 1986, risking millions in copyright violation fines for what the ECC calls 'music'. The ECC is credited with the creation of the Mash Up or Bastard Pop genre of blended pop songs, a style popular with young listeners today.

"Making new sounds out of existing works, of course, is nothing new. There are precedents in everything from 20th century classical to cartoon music, and it is the cornerstone of Hip-Hop, be it early innovators like Grand-master Flash or early innovators like Dr. Dre. In the 80's & 90's, avant-garde [Plunderphonic] sound artists like... Negativland, and the Tape-Beatles (as well as the pop-pranksters the KLF) challenged copyright law with collages made from everything from found sounds to top 40 hits. But many musical observers trace the official beginnings of the British bootleg [Mashup] scene to The Evolution Control Committee, which in 1993 mixed a public enemy a capella with music by Herb Alpert." - Neil Straus, The New York Times

Currently on tour to promote their second release on Negativland's Seeland Records, The Evolution Control Committee have been lured into playing a gig in Music City, Nashville, TN for the first time. (And it might be The End of them) Their latest release, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED, pushes the boundaries of "Copyright Infringement" to such an extreme that even the pressing plant [Pirates Press] initially refused to press up the album for them. It's their first album in seven years, and now that it's out...

YOU CAN'T LISTEN TO IT!

"The lawyers had concerns," ECC's TradeMark Gunderson explains. "Although we felt tracks like our 'What Would You Think If I Sang AutoTune' were clearly parody as well as Fair Use, the legal types thought they were lawsuit-bait." To give the label and the band an extra line of legal defense, the album includes a Listener License Agreement, a set of terms and conditions like those required in order to install computer software. "Fair Use or not, a track like 'Stairway To Britney' could easily offend a litigious party," says Seeland Industries lawyer Sandy Kryle. "We thought the best solution would be a legal agreement that forbids anyone -- everyone -- from listening. Period."

Even with the Listener License Agreement, the product was too hot for some to handle. Even the distributor initially refused to handle the album, saying that All Rights Reserved was too risky -- a surprising reaction in an era when even Girl Talk can't muster a single major label complaint.

"We're not crazy about the idea of suing our fans," says ECC band member Christy Brand. "But it seems to work for the RIAA."

stAllio! is an Indianapolis-based independent artist who works in new media and music—both under his own name and with the band he founded, Animals Within Animals. He is best known for sample-based music and for his experiments with databending and glitch art.

His latest music release is the post-mashup album A Huge Smash, available for free download from Bad Taste Music Exchange. With this album stAllio! takes the mashup aesthetic to the next level, shattering pop music history into tiny-but-still-recognizable fragments and rearranging them in increasingly complex ways. The result is a new style, decidedly glitchy and even danceable, but 100% appropriated—the sampling techniques of John Oswald meet the skittery beats of Jackson and His Computer Band.

He's also a proponent and pioneer of databending—the creative misuse of digital information in ways other than was intended—regularly incorporating sonified data files into his music, and even making music composed exclusively of such sounds. Before long, he started applying similar techniques to the visual arts, making a name for himself in the emerging field of glitch art. His work manipulating photos using Microsoft Wordpad was recently profiled in Wired UK, and his databending tutorials have been cited as an influence by many in the field.

Your only opportunity to see stAllio! regionally before his upcoming appearance at the Louisville Experimental Festival on June 21st.

Re: “Morning Teleportation w/Canago & Evan P. Donohue

Canago is an up and coming prodigy I have followed ever since their conception as Mr. Dink. The Dink’s axis powers, transferred into Canago, are Craig Brown on keys, Jason Williams on bass and Chris Smith on drums. These progressive hipsters are the pounding force behind Canago.

Since their modest beginnings, however, they have changed guitarists multiple times. It seems to me now their two-guitar format, Robbie Neighbors being proficiently soulful and Danny Smith being technically astounding is the perfect fit for their progressive sound.

The guys never fail to blow off creative improvisational steam all over the crowd every time the play. Their music, and the musicians are like the water in a brackish bayou canal; they are a sticky mix of fresh and salty.

Before the show Jason Williams described his feelings in a nonchalant stream-of-consciousness way, “Chills up my spine, Ever present butterflies, If it’s really ‘fear’ I embrace it, I feed on the adrenaline, this wholly unique experience of now, each sound will only be heard once, and we got to supply that tonight.”

They had no problem supplying the energy. The Thursday night started off fresh with inventive easy jamming. As the night progressed so did their music. They are not afraid to go into the great unknown that mutt-breed of progressive techno where many bands often loose themselves. But Canago is a confident ship that braves and even revels in the challenge of venturing into improvisation. It is an environment where they thrive.

Loyal fans danced and mingled like the birds and the bees. Craig Brown, whose stage presence is like a space aged hippie, and Jason giggled like school children at every reaction their music could muster from the crowded bar. And the night became a crescendo of happy music enthusiasts.

Shkala Ritter, a loyal fan who has been to their shows since the beginning, described the night’s experience as, “Funky Fresh Flow, Foaming From the Frothy Fruit of the Fantastic Funk Tree.” I think this is a good way to describe Canago. Their music is about evolution. They have one foot with their favorite influences of the past while trying to stay two steps beyond the future. Canago will hopefully become big. Yet, this will only happen if they take themselves and their art seriously. If so, Bowling Green should be prepared to be Canago’s home.

Re: “Rumble Circus Reunion w/Swung & Two Happy Cats

a don't miss show for those that were around Nashville int he late 80's. The original lineup of RC (Jeff Cease, Erich Hubner, Alan Johnstone, Jeffrey Van Williams) plus Swung which is actually 4/5ths of Swing - great alternative power-pop band from the same era. On top of the the most fabulous Beth Hubner will be celebrating her B-day with all sorts of 80's Hillwood alums. Old school West Nashville represent!

Blown away by PLANET INK this past Friday, 2 September. Dynamic, non stop action, solid vocals by all three of them, crazy rifs, beat the hell out drums and the bass is off the chain. Sounds like way more than three people on stage. Can't wait to get them back in Nashville.
