We chose
The Contributor — “a monthly paper that provides a diversity of perspectives on homelessness and a source of income for homeless and formerly homeless individuals while creating community between newspaper vendors and customers” — as the Best Alternative Media Project in our 2010 “Best of Nashville” issue, and the magnitude of its success became even more apparent after a recent segment on 90.3-WPLN. Blake Farmer reported that one in four vendors selling for a month or more now has a place to live, and that Contributor salesmen collectively will make close to a million dollars this year. Still, that means three of four are still homeless, so there’s more work to be done. This photography show benefit features photographs taken with disposable cameras by 26 of the newspaper’s vendors, capturing, as the press release puts it, “a revealing and inspiring portrait of the world from the perspective of homeless and formerly homeless Nashvillians.” Admission is free, though donations will be accepted; the photographs will be for sale, with profits benefiting The Contributor and the artists.
