The Black Crowes at the Ryman

Built on their reputation as rootsy blues rockers and Southern rock revivalists—beginning with the horn-blasting, gritty guitar rendition of "Hard to Handle" on their 1990 debut—it's no surprise The Black Crowes have fallen into many of the tired rock ’n’ roll clichés. Gone from rolling in rock-star swag to suffering a mid-career crisis, followed by a near-death hiatus in 2002, this Atlanta five-piece has fittingly come full circle as redefined, certified veterans. Touring off this year's well-received Warpaint—a return to form after seven years of relying on live albums and b-side releases to keep the name alive—The Black Crowes seem to have stripped away their ego in favor of authentic, well-worn soul. In so doing, these seasoned road warriors carry on a tried-and-true tradition most wouldn't be able to pull off so genuinely.
