Aside from the gospel world, bluegrass is pretty much the only place where family groups can still find a place — but making a top-notch album with a family group can be pretty challenging, especially if they’re intent on sticking to positive themes in a field where heartaches and losses are lyrical staples. Illinois family sextet The Bankesters have been heading in the right direction with their last several releases, and the new one,
Looking Forward (Blue Circle Records), hits the mark squarely, thanks in part to some savvy assistance from producer Stephen Mougin. An accomplished singer himself, Mougin’s brought out the best in all five of the group’s vocalists, and he’s rounded up a solid group of songs, too — positive, yes, but not cloying — resurrecting Bethany Dick’s under-appreciated “Some Things Never Change” and matching three dandies co-written by Lisa Shaffer with fiddler Emily Bankester, whose leads are perhaps the strongest of the bunch.
