The Bankesters Album Release Show feat. Jamie Johnson

When: Wed., July 6, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $10
“They’re a family band,” a bluegrass producer once said of one of his acts, “only better.” The point’s easy to see: The inevitable complications of band membership can be doubled when blood relations are involved. Still, the Bankesters — now making the slightly awkward transition from being The Bankester Family — prove that it’s a mistake to make assumptions, and their new self-titled release has more than its share of solid moments. Some of that has to do with encouragement from the Grascals’ Jamie Johnson, who dishes up a fine guest vocal; some with a sharp eye for material that leans toward the positive and inspirational without falling into bathos, and some with strong vocals from bassist Melissa Triplett and, especially, fiddler Emily Bankester, who holds her own with Johnson and shines on her featured numbers. But all of the Bankesters contribute, and the result is a fine slice of southern Illinois bluegrass.
