It’s time for blind optimism and hard hits. For great expectations and Eddie-up-the-middle. Time for delusions of grandeur, far-flung hopes, another 15-yard completion, and a defense that doesn’t give.
Here in the Titans’ third season in Adelphia Coliseum, the city has grown accustomed to high expectations for our football team. That’s because we’ve grown accustomed to winning. Making the playoffs is a foregone conclusion so far as Titans fans are concerned. Going to the Super Bowl is the goal. A World Championship is the only option.
It’s hard not to admire this franchise. From the top down, they are an organization that values professionalism and hard work over end-zone dances and sack-by-sack celebrations. Read Jeff Fisher’s interview with Randy Horick in this special Scene supplement, and it’s impossible not to be impressed by his emphasis on detail and preparation. It’s also hard not to be impressed when you hear the players describe the rigors of recovery after game day and their humility and respect for the game.
It’s kickoff time for the 2001 NFL season. Let Titans madness reign in the streets and revelry rule in the bars. Play ball, gentlemen. This may beour year.
