Talk the Talk

After circuiting the Canadian underground under various guises and toe-testing a solo gig in the late '90s, Elizabeth Powell seems to have finally found her foil with Land of Talk. Featuring an airtight rhythm section to anchor Powell's jangly guitar plunges and ear-tweaking vocals, this trio's full-length debut Some Are Lakes is an under-the-radar jewel aching with potential. Primarily a densely gorgeous pedestal for Powell's melodic vocal twirls and throaty girl-punk, Land of Talk relish a brand of art-rock noodling reminiscent of early Sonic Youth, but they’ve got sense enough to streamline their sly guitar scribbles for this tight 10-song LP. Perhaps in part due to nimble production by Justin Vernon—the brain behind Bon Iver—Some Are Lakes achieves a careful stability often lacking in typical basement-bred indie-rock.
